CNC Machining Processes

What is CNC Milling?

CNC Milling is a form of machining. It uses a rotary cutter to remove material by moving it into a workpiece and varying the speed and pressure of the cutting head. It's often used to produce precision parts, such as components for cars or for medical equipment. CNC milling is also popular in high-volume manufacturing.

What is CNC Turning?

CNC turning is a process that removes material. It eliminates human error and increases productivity. This process is also known as subtractive machining. Learn more about this type of machining process from this article. It is an increasingly popular way of manufacturing parts and components. Using a CNC machine, you can cut and shape parts in a way that is both accurate and efficient.

CNC Machining Materials

The process of choosing the right CNC machining materials involves considering a number of factors, including the material’s strength, durability, and corrosion resistance. The material should also be compatible with the application and environment in which it will be used. The choice of materials for CNC machining will ultimately determine the success of the product.

What is CNC Machining?

What is CNC Machining?

Computer numerical control is known as CNC. Therefore, CNC machining refers to any machining procedure that is computer-controlled. Compared to manual machining, computerized automation enables the production of parts with greater speed, accuracy, precision, and complexity. Additionally, CNC eliminates human work that would otherwise be required for manual machining. Even though they aren’t actually cutting every part, people are necessary for programming and running the machinery to make sure everything runs well.

About the CNC Machining Process

CNC, or computer numerical control machining, is a subtractive manufacturing method that leverages a combination of computerized controls and machine tools to remove layers from a solid block of material. The desired cuts in the metal are programmed according to corresponding tools and machinery, which perform the machining task in an automated fashion.

Types of CNC Machining

Different types of CNC machines are most suited for the work depending on the kind of part that needs to be machined. CNC milling makes use of multi-axis machines called CNC mills (three, four, or five axes, depending on the part complexity). Lathe machines, which typically have two axes and cut objects in a circular motion, are used in CNC turning. Electrical sparks are used in electric discharge machines (EDMs) to mold work parts into the correct shape. Another machining technique used to cut gears, splines, and sprockets is hobbling. Water jet cutters and plasma cutters are other types of CNC machines.

How Does CNC Machining Work?

CNC machining programs are written in G-code and are typically generated automatically by CAM software. CAM software, which stands for computer-aided manufacturing, creates the G-code for a 3D model using pre-determined tools and workpiece materials. The movements of the tool, the workpiece, and any tool changes are all controlled by this G-code on CNC machines. Even the coolant and other auxiliary components can be turned on or off using commands.Aluminum, steel, brass, ABS, Delrin, and nylon are the most frequent materials used for CNC machining, while it can be utilized for a wide range of materials. However, practically any hard material can be machined with a CNC. Later, we’ll go into greater detail on the materials.

CNC vs 3D Printing

CNC machined products are often more functionally sturdy and have better production quality and finish when compared to parts made using additive manufacturing techniques. Thus, when parts are prepared to be evaluated for functional correctness in the mid- to late stages of development, CNC machining is often used.

CNC Design Considerations

While the machine shop handles the majority of the details, including tooling, spindle speed, cutter type, and depth of cut, there are several crucial things you can do when designing your components to not only ensure they can be created but also to ensure you develop a lean product that isn’t too expensive.

CNC Machining FAQs

The primary advantages of CNC machining include rapid prototyping and the ability to produce full-scale production parts quickly. It offers a high level of precision and accuracy in manufacturing parts and allows for tight tolerance machining for CNC parts of all sizes. It also offers maximum flexibility across volume, pricing, lead times, and the range of materials and finishes being used.

The two primary CNC machining processes are CNC turning and CNC milling. Other machining processes include drilling, gear hobbing and electrical discharge machining, among others.

Industries that use CNC machining include aerospace, automotive parts manufacturing, medical machine manufacturing, transportation, defense, and marine industries, along with oil and gas industries and electronics. CNC machining has allowed these industries to become more efficient at mass-producing custom CNC parts.

The standard machining tolerance is ± 0.005″ or 0.13mm. Tolerances are the allowable range for a dimension. If a CNC machining tool has a tolerance of ± 0.01 mm this means that the machining tool can have a deviation of 0.01 mm in every cut. With a drawing, XIAOLIN CNC machining service can produce CNC parts with tolerance as low as ± 0.0002 in(0.005mm) Without a drawing, all CNC parts are produced to our ISO 2768 medium standard.
